Six tips for healthy winter skin.

Can you feel it coming...? The tightness in your face as the effects of winter start to take hold? We have six tips to help your skin stay well-nourished to hold onto moisture this winter. Save this for later!

First, the science! In winter humidity levels drop, which makes the air colder and dryer, in this environment the moisture on your skin evaporates quicker, leading to dryness.

Skin health starts within so check your winter diet and increase good fats, think pumpkin seeds, avocados and olive oil. Supplements like MSM, Silica, Vitamins A,C & E & Omega Oils (marine sourced) can also give skin a boost. We know its obvious to say drink lots of water but if cold drinks in winter leave you with a chill then swap for herbals teas including nettle & dandelion.

We know the temptations of overindulging in the colder months, especially over Christmas, and were not telling you to give them up but just try to avoid putting too much into your body that will dry your skin, like caffeine and alcohol.

What you put on your skin is key to its health and one of the easiest changes to make is using natural skincare products free from irritants that strip your skin of natural oils. Avoid skincare containing sulphates, petroleum or fragrance.

Protect your skin from the cold air when youre outside by using a good moisturiser and wrapping up warm. Natural products like shea butter & Weledas Skinfood are popular choices.

Exfoliate! But use it sparingly to avoid irritating the skin on your face. Be careful if you have very sensitive skin, eczema or rosacea. If exfoliating isn’t for you, use a wash cloth to apply gentle pressure to your face.

Think about your environment inside as well as out. Avoid having inside temperatures too high to stop drying out your skin and if possible use a humidifier at home. Other ways to increase moisture in the air include - more houseplants, drying your clothes inside or putting some water near a heat source - anything that makes water evaporate slowly into the air.

If your skin really suffers in the winter then pop in to see us and we’ll share some great products with you to support you through the cold.

We are now stocking Terranovas new range of fermented supplements.

But what is fermentation and how does it benefit you?

Fermentation is the chemical breakdown of a substance by bacteria, yeasts, or other microorganisms. Youll already know of some fermented foods, such as sourdough bread, kimchi, kefir and miso. This process has been used for thousands of years and can work to preserve foods, improve their taste and texture, and also increase digestibility and nutritional profile.

Recent research has shown that there are amazing health benefits to be gained from this food processing technique and Terranova are working with Fermedics to provide products which, unlock the potent healing and nourishing properties of plants and wholefoods in a way that the body is often incapable of achieving on its own..

Terranova products are proving really popular at Tullivers with their holistic approach to health and wellbeing along with the purity of their products. Another thing we love is all of their products are suitable for vegetarians and vegans, and as if that wasnt enough their distributer is Yorkshire based too!

Come in to see our selection or to speak to one of the team about these amazing new products and which will benefit you best.

You need to know this 👇

Its ok to be stressed.

In our modern life admitting to being stressed can feel like failing, that not being able to juggle everything means you can’t cope.

But stress is the reaction to feeling under pressure - its your bodys way of protecting you - and by tuning into this you can learn how to deal with it.

Stress manifests itself in everyone differently so its good to understand how YOU react - do you recognise any of these symptoms?

Tight shoulders
Skipping meals
Not sleeping
Over-eating
Irritability
Dizzyness

If so, you’re not alone – a UK stress survey showed 74% of people said stress had made them feel overwhelmed.

At Tullivers we believe in a holistic approach, looking at symptoms together rather than in isolation, so we can find the best way to support you. Here are some methods we share with customers that you can use:

Inhale deeply into the belly for 4 seconds, hold for 7 and breathe out counting to 8. This method is used in pranayama (the practice of breath control in yoga).

Did you know just seeing nature scenes can reduce stress? Being in nature decreases blood pressure, tension and the production of stress hormones. You dont have to be active, sit in a park for 10 minutes to feel the benefits.

Essential oils harness the power of aroma and for stress we recommend lavender and vetiver - dilute in your bath or a massage oil and relax.

Improve your sleep by getting outside during the day, avoiding caffeine or alcohol close to bedtime and going to bed at a similar time. We understand that sleep can still be hard to come by so if you are awake then still rest so your body can relax.

Supplements are an excellent accompanying treatment and we find adaptogenic herbs including Ashwagandha and Rhodiola particularly beneficial. We also recommend calming herbs, chamomile, valerian and passionflower served as teas or tinctures.

The key to meditation is to start small, this skill comes with practice. Dont try too hard to clear your head, your mind may drift but remember, you dont have to give thoughts value, just let them go. Regular practice will help you improve.

If you feel stressed save this post or pop in to chat about how we can help you maintain your calm.

This is a love story ❤

Tullivers is owned and run Tracey and Alan Malcolm, partners in business and in life. They have a love for York, a love for health and wellness and a love for, well, each other!

Tracey and Alan took ownership of Tullivers in 2017 along with Alans sister and brother-in-law, so it really is a family affair! Before this, Alan was the assistant manager at Tullivers and had worked there for 15 years, while Tracey had worked at Tullivers too for a time and also has a background in other wellness and spiritual businesses. Of course neither of them knew when they first worked together that theyd become a married couple with little girl and two cats (there would be more cats if Tracey could get away with it!).

Now theyve been running Tullivers for almost 5 years and have truly made it their own. From when Tullivers first opened in 1983 to now Tracey and Alan have expanded to introduce more specialist products as well as more vegan lines, zero-waste options and refills as well as redecorating to reflect their own personality and values, but they still stay true to the roots of the shop and you can buy over 200 different herbs and spices weighed out for as little or as much as you want as well as a range of wholefoods, free-from and organic products.

Tracey and Alan believe that wellness should be available to all and along with their team they want to support you in caring for yourself, your body and your well-being and they stock a range of products to help you. They can also advise you on digestive disorders, joint problems, stress, immune health, menopausal symptoms/hormonal balance, pregnancy, sleep issues and products for babies and children.

So whether you want to start supporting yourself in a more holistic way or just find those products that you simply cannot find in other shops then come in and say hi to Tracey, Alan and the team and they will extend their love to you too!
